Using A Roof Tarp In Emergency Situations.

Following any major storm the next crucial step is damage assessment. As part of the assessment process it is important to note the areas most critically affected by the storm and make temporary repairs to stabilize your home until a professional contractor is available. One of the most common types of damage after major storms is roof damage. Using a tarp to cover the damaged areas is crucial until more permanent repairs can be made. Immediate action in emergency situations can prevent further deterioration to the exposed areas of a roof and can greatly reduce future repair costs. However, tarping a roof should only be done if there is an immediate threat of further damage and a professional is not available to complete the task. When making tarp repairs to a roof it is always best to use the buddy system and have a friend or neighbor assist you with the project. Avoid standing on steeply pitched rooftops and never stand directly on the tarp when applying it to the roof, especially if it is wet.

Identifying the damaged areas caused by hurricanes, tropical storms and other natural elements can be difficult at first sight but there are some key indicators that damage has occurred. Some of those key indicators include but are not limited to disturbed shingles caused by high winds, dipping or indentations to the roof, broken roof tiles, missing sheet metal panels and of course water damage to the inside of the house due to leaking or dripping. Water will travel the path of least resistance so the area the leak appears to be in may not actually be the origin. If possible, try to track the water leak to its origin. In order to accomplish this you may have to crawl in the attic or even cut a square out of the ceiling drywall to find the source.

Once all damaged areas have been assessed, the tarp process can be initiated. There are a couple of different options available for roof covers but a polyethylene tarp is the preferred fabric due to its tear resistant qualities. It is safer and more manageable to use several smaller covers than one large cover. In addition to a tarp cover, some other items are essential for the process and include a ladder, a pair of heavy-duty gloves, a hammer, safety glasses, a cutting instrument, several 2 x 4 wooden studs and 3-1/4” screws or framing nails. Start by laying out the tarpaulin over the damaged area. If you need to use multiple tarps to completely cover an area then connect the two pieces by overlapping them. Use a 2 x 4 strip of wood that is longer than the width of the tarp and place it on top of the tarps edge that is overlapping the bottom cover. Fold the wood strip back on itself with both the bottom and top tarp at the same time. Complete three full rotations before securing the 2 x 4 strip to the roof with nails or screws. The folding of the tarps with the wood strip will create a seal and prevent water from seeping through the two separate covers. Place an additional strip of wood, of equal length, on top of the first and secure it with nails or screws. The sandwich effect will further reduce water seepage as well as, strengthen the hold on the roof. The final step in the process will require placing 2 x 4 strips of wood cut into 3 or 4-foot sections along the perimeter of the tarp cover. Try to space the strips of wood about 1 foot apart from one another. The space between strips will allow the movement of water, dirt and debris and prevent it from collecting on top of the tarp and damaged area.

Safety is of the utmost importance and using a tarp cover, as a temporary solution should only be done in an emergency situation. Never attempt to repair a roof during a storm and always stop working if the weather starts to worsen. Roof repairs are best left to the professionals, so if there is any professional assistance available please use it. Furthermore, always remember to use the buddy system when on a roof or using ladders. Roofs can be extremely dangerous and under no circumstances should these steps be attempted in foul weather or unsafe conditions. These instructions are just a suggestion and the author holds no liability or responsibility for accidents that may occur during the repair nor holds any responsibility for faulty repairs. Furthermore, it is recommended that you consult with a professional if there is any doubt whatsoever about safety or procedure.

Large Tarps: Large Heavy-Duty Covers

In recent years there has become an increasing demand for poly tarps in larger sizes. Tarp covers are no longer being used as just simple canopy covers, but instead are being used in construction, athletics, commercial and government applications. The tarpaulin industry has experienced dramatic growth as the demand for product is reaching wider audiences. In response, CanopiesAndTarps.com has increased our inventory as well as added several new colors to our product line, including Clear Tarps, Tan Tarps and Blue Mesh Tarps. New growth is always expected however, in recent years the demand for larger size tarps has increased as consumers look for cost effective solutions to help protect property and valuables.

Poly Tarps provide the same dependable coverage as specialized products but for much less of a cost. Primary uses for large tarps include roof coverage, slope erosion control, athletic field covers and equipment protection. Large tarpaulin covers are available in both heavy-duty and regular duty varieties. The difference in quality is attributed to the tarps thickness and grommet spacing. Large, heavy-duty tarps are generally 12 Mil. in thickness and contain grommets every 18 inches. The heavy-duty tarp is designed for applications that require longer coverage where as the large, regular duty tarp is considered a multi-purpose cover for short-term projects. The regular duty tarp is 4-6 Mil in thickness and features grommet spacing every 36 inches. Both large tarp varieties are made with high-grade polyethylene fibers, which are heat laminated and retrofitted with, rust resistant aluminum grommets.

Polyethylene is the ideal fabric for outdoor applications due to its natural resistance to mildew and rot. Moreover, every poly tarp is fully waterproof and is UV treated inside and out with added fade blockers anti-aging, anti-yellowing and anti-microbial agents. The result is a cover that has the ability to stand up to the elements and provide substantial protection year after year.

Although there are many different sizes of poly tarps available, large tarps are beneficial because they complete the job with the use of one single cover. There is no need to purchase several smaller tarps, as has been the case in previous years. Large tarp covers are available in Blue, Green, Silver and White colors. Large tarps can be purchased starting at size 40’ x 60’ and are even available as large as 170’ x 170’. Each large tarp is packaged and shipped on a pallet through LTL trucking and has an expected delivery time of 4-5 business days depending on the destination.

Tent Tarps For Camping.

Tarps are a great choice for temporary protection. The poly tarp material is naturally waterproof and contains grommets every 18 inches, which makes securing the cover easy. In this video Sean Mulhall, gives detailed instructions on how to use a tarp as a tent while camping. Tarpaulins are made of lightweight material and can be folded to fit in small back pack compartments or even rolled up with a blanket and then packed. Once a desirable location has been chosen, all you need to set up your tarp tent is a couple of trees, some bungee chords and some branches off the ground. The most common size tarp used for this application is the 8 x 10 but an even larger tarp can be used if a larger coverage area is needed for multiple campers. The camouflage tarp is the perfect tent tarp as it blends into the natural environment. Watch this video tutorial titled “Tarp Sleep System”.

Using A Tarp As A Ground Layer For Tents.

Tarps can be used for many different purposes. For this reason, the poly tarp has become one of the most popular choices for protection against rain and snow. Having a solid ground cover for camping tents is important because it will not only keep the tent dry from ground moisture but it will also act as a protective barrier against rocks, dirt, snow, and pine needles. In this video expert John Stewart, an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, explains how to use a tarp for camping tents and the importance of selecting the correct size. (Video Link)

Clear Poly Tarps

Clear Tarps are similar to other heavy-duty poly tarps and can be used for a variety of outdoor applications, including greenhouse covers, temporary shelter covers and weather barrier covers. The clear tarp is the primary choice among the agricultural community for greenhouse protection. The clear polyethylene allows natural light to transmit through the fabric, which promotes healthy growth in plants and flowers. Like all poly tarps, these clear tarps are waterproof and consist of 3 x 3 polyester mesh squares throughout that add strength to the fabric. The clear poly tarp is 14 mil. in thickness and 6 oz. per square yard.

A clear tarp would be great for a temporary outdoor sunroom for plants, flowers and vegetable gardens. The clear poly can be easily attached to any frame structure by using ball bungee ties and is light enough for PVC structures. Furthermore, the clear plastic material can be used as a fence tarp for agricultural gardens to prevent incoming debris. As a weather protection barrier, the clear tarp will keep gardens safe from outside elements but will still allow the sun to penetrate for optimal growth. Best of all, the clear tarp is made of polyethylene and is naturally resistant to mold, rot and mildew. The poly cover can be used outside for protection year after year.

Christmas Trees And Tarps

A poly tarp is considered a multi-use cover and one such use is for Christmas Trees. Having a poly tarp available when purchasing your tree is a valuable asset. The tree can be placed on the tarpaulin and then dragged to the vehicle. Once the tree is at the vehicle, use the poly tarp as a protective cover to line the back or roof of the car. By doing this you can avoid all the messy tree sap and pine needles. Furthermore, the poly tarp can then be used to carry the tree into the house without creating a trail of falling debris. Use the same tarpaulin as a ground cover to place the tree on and avoid any damage to your carpet or furniture. When the Holiday is over the handy tarp will again assist you in taking the tree outside to the curb for disposal. Your poly tarp is now available for the next task. Remember to clean the tarp after use, fold it and store it in a dry clean place.

Solar Paneled Carports

Carports are now serving a bigger purpose in our lives. In addition to providing protection for your vehicle, carports now have the capability to provide enough solar energy to power up to 3,000 homes per year. The introduction of solar paneled carport systems has been in the news a lot lately and is gaining much attention from city officials as a solution for going "Green". EnXco, a California based wind and solar firm, is in negotiations with Suffolk County to seal the deal on a 20 year contract that would result in the construction of several solar carports throughout the county. Imagine that, protecting your vehicle while at the same time helping the environment. Solar Carports are saving the world!

Outdoor Canopies

Outdoor canopy is a broad term for a variety of canopy products that differ in both styles and sizes. In addition, there are many different pipe diameters that can be used to make an outdoor canopy. It is important to know the dimensions of the area where the outdoor canopy will be used. Coverage dimensions as well as weather conditions are two key factors when choosing the canopy that is best for your application. Regions with moderate weather conditions have the option of using just about any canopy but for regions of heavy snowfall or extreme heat, choosing the right canopy is essential. When purchasing an outdoor canopy for areas with frequent and heavy snowfall the canopy cover should be a minimum of 9-10 oz. in weight with 48” rafter spacing for the frame members. Moreover, it is advised to purchase an outdoor canopy with a minimum of 1-5/8” diameter tubing. CanopiesAndTarps.com offers a line of pre-selected outdoor canopies that are perfect for regions with frequent snowfall. Our snow load canopies include both peaked roofs and dome shaped roofs and all include heavy-duty polyethylene covers.

Poly Tarp Uses and Characteristics

Poly Tarps are used for a variety of different applications. Some of the most common uses are but not limited to roof and building covers, hurricane protection, canopies, truck tarps, privacy tarps, field tarps, shade tarps, hay tarps, lumber tarps, athletic field covers, gym floor covers, fire retardant covers and boat tarps. Poly Tarps are the preferred cover for multi-purpose applications due to their strength, durability and price. Poly tarps are commonly found to be UV treated, waterproof, mildew and rot resistant, contain sun blocking materials and contain fibers that resist arctic temperatures. UV treated poly tarps have a special chemical treatment that is applied at the time of manufacturing which helps protect the fibers from prolonged sun degradation. Polyethylene material in and of itself is naturally waterproof. The tightly woven fibers and laminated layers of the Poly Tarp results in a durable and waterproof product that is very dependable in wet environments. Due to the fact that polyethylene is a natural waterproof material it is also very resistant mold, mildew and rot. In addition, Poly Tarps perform very well in freezing temperatures, resisting the negative effects of cold weather. Most Poly Tarps consist of three layers however, an additional sun blocking layer can be found in the silver or grey colored tarps. Due to the sun blocking layer, silver tarps provide total shade and protection from the elements. The sun blocker consists of a single black layer of polyethylene which is then placed between the existing polyethylene layers to prevent any sunlight from penetrating the cover.

Poly Tarp Construction and Definitions:

Poly Tarps also known as Polyethylene Tarps are constructed of multiple mesh fabric layers which are then coated by polyethylene sheets. Each manufactured poly tarp is distinguished by the fabrics mesh count and mil. The poly tarp’s mesh count is determined by the number of threads used per square inch. For example, a poly tarp rated at a 10 x 10 mesh count would typically have 10 threads per inch in both a vertical and horizontal direction. The tarps thickness is determined and measured by the mil or thickness of the coating (1 mil = .001 inch (1/1000). The larger the number; the thicker and more heavy duty the Poly Tarp will be. Regular duty Poly Tarps are typically rated at 6 mils and are commonly used for temporary coverage from the outside elements. Heavy duty poly tarps can range from 12 to 23 mils in thickness and are the preferred tarps for canopy frames.

Poly Tarps are often referred to as P.E. Tarps and are sold in either pre-cut sizes or by the roll. Poly Tarps are available in a variety sizes, colors and thicknesses. It is important to note that the actual size of the Poly Tarp will be 4 to 6 inches smaller in each direction than the size listed on the package. This is referred to as the cut and finish size. The difference in the size is the result of the grommet application process. Grommets are the brass, aluminum or metal rings lining the poly tarps and are used to aid in the attaching of the poly tarp to the canopy frame. The spacing of the grommets will vary from one manufacturer to another. Generally, spacing of the grommets will be between 18 to 36 inches. Shorter spacing of the grommets gives strength to the tarp and helps aid in the prevention of extreme movement that is associated with tearing.

In addition to grommets, Poly Tarps have several features that help reinforce the overall strength of the fabric. On each corner of a poly tarp a triangular plastic covering is installed to prevent the grommets from pulling through the fabric. The corners of the poly tarp are subject to the most tension under harsh conditions. Furthermore, during the grommet process a perimeter rope is added before the tarp fabric is folded back on itself and then laminated to create the hem. The combination of the perimeter rope and hem add great strength to the edges of the fabric

Party Tents

Outdoor events are becoming more common especially for weddings and parties. Party Tents are a great way to celebrate any event in style. Unlike the more functional canopies on the market, Party Tents protect and serve as a part of the overall allure of the event. Party Tents range in many different sizes, colors and styles. Party Tents Depending on the event being held are offered in bright colors that are visually stunning and more conservative colors like those of Wedding Tents. Party Event Tents have the additional option of enclosing the entire structure with side panels which add not only elegance but also add further protection from the elements. Side panels allow for greater versatility in event situations. During the day the side panels can be left off keeping the Party Tent bright and allowing the breeze to enter the tent. Once the event enters into the evening hours the side panels can be attached to provide protection from the cold and to also give a more elegant appearance. Whatever the event or occasion may be, Party Tents are a great and creative alternative to standard events held in buildings.

Fire Retardant Tarp Testing and Certification

The ever changing United States Fire Codes have made it necessary to introduce Fire Retardant Tarps to the market. Many states require Fire Retardant Tarps to be used at any event or gathering where large numbers of people will be present. So what is the difference between regular and Fire Retardant Poly Tarps? The difference is either within the fibers used to make the Poly Tarp or by an extra topical treatment added to the Poly Tarp itself. Fire Retardant Tarps produced using fire retardant threads are designed to self extinguish when in contact with open flame. It is important to note that Fire Retardant Tarps are not fire proof but rather resistant to flame and have the ability to self extinguish and resist the melting or dripping common of polyethylene. Topical application is another method used in the manufacturing of Fire Retardant Tarps. Topically treated Fire Retardant Tarps have a chemical that is applied to the surface that reduces the fabric’s flammability to the extent that it becomes nearly non-combustible. Although both methods achieve the same goal, the use of fire retardant threads is the preferred and ideal method when making Fire Retardant Tarps. Unlike fire retardant threads which have an infinite lifespan, the topical treatment of fire retardant chemicals on a fabric have a certification limit of one year before the chemical must be re-applied. In addition to the manufacturing components of Fire Retardant Tarps, each tarp must then pass extensive testing requirements before being sold to the public. Once a company feels confidant that their product will meet the fire retardant requirements set by the state a sample will be sent to an independent testing agency. The testing process is extremely extensive and each product must go through a series of obstacles to be considered fire retardant. Once the fabric passes the test from the independent agency it is then sent to the state fire marshal for more testing and final certification. The minimum standards and/or guidelines for fire resistant products are set by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) and the Canvas Products Association’s (CPAI) recommendations. Based on these recommendations each state then has the option of implementing fire codes which surpass those set by the NFPA. California is one such state creating a fire code that has become the example for other states to follow. California Title 19 is the toughest fire code in the nation and is the ultimate test for any product. If the product passes the test set forth by the state fire marshal it can then be given the state fire marshal’s tag which must be attached and visible on each product sold.

New Arrivals To Our Line Of Tarp Products.

At CanopiesAndTarps.com we strive to bring our customers new products on a regular basis. We now have Clear Tarps and Tan Tarps available for purchase. This December we will be launching our newest item, Blue Mesh Tarps. If you have any ideas on new products please let us know and we will do our best to include them in our product line.

Choosing The Right Poly Tarp For You.

The Polyethylene Tarp has become one of the most popular choices among consumers for home protection, construction sites and recreation. The popularity of the Poly Tarp is largely due to the cost effectiveness compared to that of more expensive fabrics such as canvas and polyester. Moreover, the Poly Tarp is highly versatile based on the composition of polyethylene. The elements, which make up polyethylene, are naturally mildew resistant, waterproof, lightweight and flexible. Polyethylene Tarps will not tear or crack when exposed to the harsh extremes of hot and cold weather. The introduction of Polyethylene Tarps to the market has not only given the consumer a more cost effective product but has also allowed manufacturers to be more competitive with their product pricing. In the end you the consumer wins.

Poly Tarps are generally comprised of several layers of woven mesh fabric. The mesh fabric is then placed between two or more layers of large polyethylene sheets that are heat laminated before undergoing the finishing process. Once a Poly Tarp has been heat laminated it is then cut to the necessary production size. This process is referred to as the cut size or list size of the tarp. The cut size is not the actual size of the tarp once it reaches the consumer. When shopping for Tarpaulins one may notice on the package a box, which describes the cut size and the finish size. This is important to note because if you are looking far a 10’ x 20’ tarp the actual dimension of the tarp is 9’6” x 19’6”. The finish size is less than the list or cut size due to the grommet application process. Grommets are metal rings made of brass, steel or aluminum, which are used to secure the tarp using a fastening system such as Ball Bungee Ties. During the grommet application process the edges of the tarps are folded back on themselves and heat laminated with a reinforcement rope placed between the fold. The grommets are then stamped into place usually every 12, 18 or 36 inches apart. When shopping for a Poly Tarp one important element to look for is the mesh count. The mesh count of the tarp is determined by how closely the mesh threads are in relation to one another. The mesh count is the number of threads per square inch in both a vertical and horizontal pattern. The mesh count is also a key factor in the determining strength of a particular tarp.

Lighter weight tarps are typically Blue Tarps and generally have an overall mesh count of 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 weave. Blue poly tarps are used for applications such as ground tarps for camping, drop cloths for painting, general household covers and in recent years have become the primary choice for roof protection after and during hurricane season. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005 FEMA handed out thousands of Blue Tarps to residents as a way to protect their houses from further damage caused by rain. Lightweight and inexpensive, the Blue Poly Tarp is extremely popular as an all purpose general cover but is not the choice for use on canopy frames.

Heavy Duty Poly Tarps come in a variety of colors and generally have a minimum mesh count of 12 x 12 or 14 x 14. The most popular Heavy Duty Tarps on the market today are Silver Tarps and White Tarps. Heavy Duty Tarps are the ideal choice for canopy applications due to their strength and resistance. The Silver Heavy Duty Tarp is a unique waterproof material that is lightweight, inexpensive and provides total shade. Designed with a black polyethylene center layer, the Silver Tarp blocks 100% of the suns harmful UV rays and is 100% waterproof. The White Heavy Duty Tarp is also a strong, lightweight and waterproof material with a 12 x 12 or 14 x 14 mesh count but does not include the black sun blocker material. The White Poly Tarp is popular choice for its ability to allow natural light come through while at the same time providing some shade and UV protection. If you are looking for a Heavy Duty Poly Tarp that is Fire Retardant make certain the tarp is certified by the proper authorities and meets the minimum requirements of NFPA 701 and CPAI-84. Polyethylene is not naturally flame resistant and in fact is comprised partly of petroleum products making it flammable when in contact with open flame. There are Flame Retardant Poly Tarps available that have been manufactured using either flame resistant fibers or a topical application process. Poly Tarps of this nature are required to undergo vigorous testing and certification before entering the market. A Fire Retardant Tarp is required to have a permanent tag affixed to the material, which displays the certification code and qualifications of the tarp.

There are many tarps on the market today and choosing the right size and material can be challenging. The poly tarp is the most cost effective tarp on the market and has gained much popularity due its versatility. When shopping for a poly tarp be certain to read the offered specifications before deciding what tarp is right for your particular application.
