Outdoor Canopies

Outdoor canopy is a broad term for a variety of canopy products that differ in both styles and sizes. In addition, there are many different pipe diameters that can be used to make an outdoor canopy. It is important to know the dimensions of the area where the outdoor canopy will be used. Coverage dimensions as well as weather conditions are two key factors when choosing the canopy that is best for your application. Regions with moderate weather conditions have the option of using just about any canopy but for regions of heavy snowfall or extreme heat, choosing the right canopy is essential. When purchasing an outdoor canopy for areas with frequent and heavy snowfall the canopy cover should be a minimum of 9-10 oz. in weight with 48” rafter spacing for the frame members. Moreover, it is advised to purchase an outdoor canopy with a minimum of 1-5/8” diameter tubing. CanopiesAndTarps.com offers a line of pre-selected outdoor canopies that are perfect for regions with frequent snowfall. Our snow load canopies include both peaked roofs and dome shaped roofs and all include heavy-duty polyethylene covers.

Poly Tarp Uses and Characteristics

Poly Tarps are used for a variety of different applications. Some of the most common uses are but not limited to roof and building covers, hurricane protection, canopies, truck tarps, privacy tarps, field tarps, shade tarps, hay tarps, lumber tarps, athletic field covers, gym floor covers, fire retardant covers and boat tarps. Poly Tarps are the preferred cover for multi-purpose applications due to their strength, durability and price. Poly tarps are commonly found to be UV treated, waterproof, mildew and rot resistant, contain sun blocking materials and contain fibers that resist arctic temperatures. UV treated poly tarps have a special chemical treatment that is applied at the time of manufacturing which helps protect the fibers from prolonged sun degradation. Polyethylene material in and of itself is naturally waterproof. The tightly woven fibers and laminated layers of the Poly Tarp results in a durable and waterproof product that is very dependable in wet environments. Due to the fact that polyethylene is a natural waterproof material it is also very resistant mold, mildew and rot. In addition, Poly Tarps perform very well in freezing temperatures, resisting the negative effects of cold weather. Most Poly Tarps consist of three layers however, an additional sun blocking layer can be found in the silver or grey colored tarps. Due to the sun blocking layer, silver tarps provide total shade and protection from the elements. The sun blocker consists of a single black layer of polyethylene which is then placed between the existing polyethylene layers to prevent any sunlight from penetrating the cover.

Poly Tarp Construction and Definitions:

Poly Tarps also known as Polyethylene Tarps are constructed of multiple mesh fabric layers which are then coated by polyethylene sheets. Each manufactured poly tarp is distinguished by the fabrics mesh count and mil. The poly tarp’s mesh count is determined by the number of threads used per square inch. For example, a poly tarp rated at a 10 x 10 mesh count would typically have 10 threads per inch in both a vertical and horizontal direction. The tarps thickness is determined and measured by the mil or thickness of the coating (1 mil = .001 inch (1/1000). The larger the number; the thicker and more heavy duty the Poly Tarp will be. Regular duty Poly Tarps are typically rated at 6 mils and are commonly used for temporary coverage from the outside elements. Heavy duty poly tarps can range from 12 to 23 mils in thickness and are the preferred tarps for canopy frames.

Poly Tarps are often referred to as P.E. Tarps and are sold in either pre-cut sizes or by the roll. Poly Tarps are available in a variety sizes, colors and thicknesses. It is important to note that the actual size of the Poly Tarp will be 4 to 6 inches smaller in each direction than the size listed on the package. This is referred to as the cut and finish size. The difference in the size is the result of the grommet application process. Grommets are the brass, aluminum or metal rings lining the poly tarps and are used to aid in the attaching of the poly tarp to the canopy frame. The spacing of the grommets will vary from one manufacturer to another. Generally, spacing of the grommets will be between 18 to 36 inches. Shorter spacing of the grommets gives strength to the tarp and helps aid in the prevention of extreme movement that is associated with tearing.

In addition to grommets, Poly Tarps have several features that help reinforce the overall strength of the fabric. On each corner of a poly tarp a triangular plastic covering is installed to prevent the grommets from pulling through the fabric. The corners of the poly tarp are subject to the most tension under harsh conditions. Furthermore, during the grommet process a perimeter rope is added before the tarp fabric is folded back on itself and then laminated to create the hem. The combination of the perimeter rope and hem add great strength to the edges of the fabric

Party Tents

Outdoor events are becoming more common especially for weddings and parties. Party Tents are a great way to celebrate any event in style. Unlike the more functional canopies on the market, Party Tents protect and serve as a part of the overall allure of the event. Party Tents range in many different sizes, colors and styles. Party Tents Depending on the event being held are offered in bright colors that are visually stunning and more conservative colors like those of Wedding Tents. Party Event Tents have the additional option of enclosing the entire structure with side panels which add not only elegance but also add further protection from the elements. Side panels allow for greater versatility in event situations. During the day the side panels can be left off keeping the Party Tent bright and allowing the breeze to enter the tent. Once the event enters into the evening hours the side panels can be attached to provide protection from the cold and to also give a more elegant appearance. Whatever the event or occasion may be, Party Tents are a great and creative alternative to standard events held in buildings.

Fire Retardant Tarp Testing and Certification

The ever changing United States Fire Codes have made it necessary to introduce Fire Retardant Tarps to the market. Many states require Fire Retardant Tarps to be used at any event or gathering where large numbers of people will be present. So what is the difference between regular and Fire Retardant Poly Tarps? The difference is either within the fibers used to make the Poly Tarp or by an extra topical treatment added to the Poly Tarp itself. Fire Retardant Tarps produced using fire retardant threads are designed to self extinguish when in contact with open flame. It is important to note that Fire Retardant Tarps are not fire proof but rather resistant to flame and have the ability to self extinguish and resist the melting or dripping common of polyethylene. Topical application is another method used in the manufacturing of Fire Retardant Tarps. Topically treated Fire Retardant Tarps have a chemical that is applied to the surface that reduces the fabric’s flammability to the extent that it becomes nearly non-combustible. Although both methods achieve the same goal, the use of fire retardant threads is the preferred and ideal method when making Fire Retardant Tarps. Unlike fire retardant threads which have an infinite lifespan, the topical treatment of fire retardant chemicals on a fabric have a certification limit of one year before the chemical must be re-applied. In addition to the manufacturing components of Fire Retardant Tarps, each tarp must then pass extensive testing requirements before being sold to the public. Once a company feels confidant that their product will meet the fire retardant requirements set by the state a sample will be sent to an independent testing agency. The testing process is extremely extensive and each product must go through a series of obstacles to be considered fire retardant. Once the fabric passes the test from the independent agency it is then sent to the state fire marshal for more testing and final certification. The minimum standards and/or guidelines for fire resistant products are set by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) and the Canvas Products Association’s (CPAI) recommendations. Based on these recommendations each state then has the option of implementing fire codes which surpass those set by the NFPA. California is one such state creating a fire code that has become the example for other states to follow. California Title 19 is the toughest fire code in the nation and is the ultimate test for any product. If the product passes the test set forth by the state fire marshal it can then be given the state fire marshal’s tag which must be attached and visible on each product sold.
