Discover The Many Uses Of Tarpaulins

Tarpaulins, commonly known as tarps, can fulfill a wide variety of needs for a wide range of citizens. No matter what sorts of outdoor activities you like to partake in, chances are that there are tarpaulins that can help you out and serve to be very useful for your needs. Whether you like to camp, cookout or simply need to cover some of your valuable items, tarps are the way to go.

Some of the many beneficial features of various tarpaulins include the ability to be water proof, weatherproof and resistant to ultraviolet rays. As can be imagined, these features make tarps extremely useful in a wide variety of outdoor uses. Tarps can be used to make makeshift shelters for campers and travelers, among many other things.

Tarpaulins are a favorite option for construction workers, as they can be used to cover and protect building materials over night or during long stretches of time when the materials will not be in use or need to be transported. The waterproof and heat resistant abilities make them useful for a wide variety of different types of materials that need to be protected from extreme weather conditions. For this reason, tarps are a favorite possession for construction sites and other outdoor related professions.

Because they are waterproof, tarpaulins are also very often used to cover cars, motorcycles, boats and other vehicles that may need to be stored outside. Keeping moisture out is essential for storing vehicles, as rust can wreak havoc on automobiles that have frequent prolonged exposure to water and condensation. Many tarps are heavy duty enough to protect against rain and dew for months at a time.

Another common use for tarpaulins is for various temporary outdoor structures. For instance, tarps can be used at outdoor barbecues or camping trips to make canopies that will block out the intense rays of the sun that can all too often spoil an otherwise fun outdoor event. With the proper supports, tarps can be stretched across to provide temporary relief to crowds both large and small, depending on the size of the tarps.

Discover the many different possibilities provided by tarpaulins. Tarps in all different sizes, types and styles can be found by companies that supply traps for sale. Depending on how you will be using them, certain kinds of tarps will be more suited to your needs, with differences in material being one of the major distinguishing factors between different tarp types. Pick out the best tarp for your needs today.

Tarps - Perfect Protection For Your Home!

Tarps are perfect protection for your home, your vehicles, and the activities that you want to do outside. As emergency supplies, tarps make one of the most flexible materials due to a number of reasons. The first is that they are very lightweight, meaning that they can be easily folded and stored into most spaces. They are also treated to be waterproof, regardless of what material they are made from, so that you will not have to worry about them being rotted from moisture over time. In situations like this, you should consider a polyethylene weave over a strict canvas tarp, but you can use both with relatively few problems.

Tarps make good emergency supplies because they can be used for a number of reasons. If you are in a storm, and your roof springs a leak, you can use your tarp to patch the ceiling and keep water from entering the interior of your home until the storm passes. You can also use the tarp cover vital electronic equipment in the home, which can be easily damaged by exposure to water. Outside of emergencies, tarps can be used for covering vehicles outside of the home during the fall and winter seasons. Tarps will keep the moisture out of the mechanical parts of your vehicles, and make sure that they remain rust free throughout the season until you need to use them again. Although they are not the perfect solution for long term vehicle storage, for short term solutions you will be hard pressed to find something so convenient, efficient, and cost-effective as tarps.

You can also use tarps for out door activities. These coverings are not only ideal for placing over a tent as another layer of rain protection, but they can be used to help cover any equipment you might have brought along with you. Tarps, when used outdoors, have a number of different applications, most of which involve keeping water from where it should not be. Consider using tarps if you are planning a camping trip and want to make sure that you have another layer of insurance against yourself of your equipment getting soaked in the event of a heavy rain. With a wide variety of materials and colors available, there are tarps that can be used for nearly any occasion. Look through a catalog and pick out a few for yourself.

Silver Tarps – Cover with Confidence

When you want to have the best tarp available silver tarps are what you need to buy. These tarps tend to be the best quality and heavy duty. The silver color allows the UV rays from the sun to be reflected and therefore the tarp remains cool to the touch. These tarps are also waterproof and do not mildew or mold. You can be confident that when using a tarp with a silver color that you can use it for many different purposes. You will be able to protect everything you cover from the elements such as wind, rain and sun.

Silver tarps that are high quality will also have an abundant amount of grommets. With a large amount of grommets you can be confident that once you tie down your tarp it will not move. Also, the grommets will not rust or tarnish. Tarps such as this will also be so strong that they will not tear under strenuous conditions and they will not be mutilated by acid. You can also count on the corners being reinforced. This will enable the tarp to last through many uses and also allow you to be confident that once it is strapped down that the items you are covering will be safe and secure.

Since silver is a very reflective color, you can be confident that no matter if you buy a tarp that is five by five or one hundred by one hundred your tarp will keep what it is covering cool and will not allow it to become moist. There are so many different options as to what you can cover with a tarp such as this. Everything from log piles and hay bales to lawn furniture and baseball fields can benefit from the coverage that silver tarps can provide.

Overall, no matter what the reasoning is as to why you are buying silver tarps, it is important that you purchase the right amount at the right price. Take the time to fully research how to cover what you need to be protected and make sure that you have the right size of tarp. Also make sure that you place what you are covering in the proper location so that water does not seep below the silver tarp and ruin your items. You can be confident that once you remove the tarps from your items, you will be pleasantly surprised that it looks just as it did when you first covered it.

White Tarps Are Popular Among Consumers.

Tarps are available in a wide variety of colors and one such color is white. As with all poly products, the white tarp is made of high-density polyethylene materials and is designed for outdoor use. There are several common uses for poly covers but keeping valuables safe from weather related elements is the primary factor responsible for the white tarps popularity. Each tarpaulin is retrofitted with grommets every 18 inches as well as rope reinforced edges and corner guards.

Although capable of blocking up to 95% of the suns UV rays, white tarps do not have a black inner scrim layer. These covers allow the natural light to penetrate, which is perfect for those individuals that would like visibility along with superb protection. The white tarp was first introduced to the public almost 30 years ago and due to an ever increasing demand, several sizes have been manufactured and available for purchase. Sizes range from 05 x 07 and are produced as large as 170 x 170. Moreover, there have been so many different sizes manufactured in recent years that the larger covers have now been categorized by themselves and are often used as athletic field covers.

In addition to the standard white heavy-duty tarp there is also a version that is fire retardant and certified under NFPA-701, CPAI-84 and California Title 19. The newest white plastic tarp available is part of the super heavy-duty line of products and features a 14 mil thickness and weighs 8.5 Ounces Per Square Yard. The super heavy-duty line is most commonly used for hay coverage and regions that contend with tropical and sub-tropical conditions.

Poly Tarp Uses and Characteristics

Poly Tarps are used for a variety of different applications. Some of the most common uses are but not limited to roof and building covers, hurricane protection, canopies, truck tarps, privacy tarps, field tarps, shade tarps, hay tarps, lumber tarps, athletic field covers, gym floor covers, fire retardant covers and boat tarps. Poly Tarps are the preferred cover for multi-purpose applications due to their strength, durability and price. Poly tarps are commonly found to be UV treated, waterproof, mildew and rot resistant, contain sun blocking materials and contain fibers that resist arctic temperatures. UV treated poly tarps have a special chemical treatment that is applied at the time of manufacturing which helps protect the fibers from prolonged sun degradation. Polyethylene material in and of itself is naturally waterproof. The tightly woven fibers and laminated layers of the Poly Tarp results in a durable and waterproof product that is very dependable in wet environments. Due to the fact that polyethylene is a natural waterproof material it is also very resistant mold, mildew and rot. In addition, Poly Tarps perform very well in freezing temperatures, resisting the negative effects of cold weather. Most Poly Tarps consist of three layers however, an additional sun blocking layer can be found in the silver or grey colored tarps. Due to the sun blocking layer, silver tarps provide total shade and protection from the elements. The sun blocker consists of a single black layer of polyethylene which is then placed between the existing polyethylene layers to prevent any sunlight from penetrating the cover.

Poly Tarp Construction and Definitions:

Poly Tarps also known as Polyethylene Tarps are constructed of multiple mesh fabric layers which are then coated by polyethylene sheets. Each manufactured poly tarp is distinguished by the fabrics mesh count and mil. The poly tarp’s mesh count is determined by the number of threads used per square inch. For example, a poly tarp rated at a 10 x 10 mesh count would typically have 10 threads per inch in both a vertical and horizontal direction. The tarps thickness is determined and measured by the mil or thickness of the coating (1 mil = .001 inch (1/1000). The larger the number; the thicker and more heavy duty the Poly Tarp will be. Regular duty Poly Tarps are typically rated at 6 mils and are commonly used for temporary coverage from the outside elements. Heavy duty poly tarps can range from 12 to 23 mils in thickness and are the preferred tarps for canopy frames.

Poly Tarps are often referred to as P.E. Tarps and are sold in either pre-cut sizes or by the roll. Poly Tarps are available in a variety sizes, colors and thicknesses. It is important to note that the actual size of the Poly Tarp will be 4 to 6 inches smaller in each direction than the size listed on the package. This is referred to as the cut and finish size. The difference in the size is the result of the grommet application process. Grommets are the brass, aluminum or metal rings lining the poly tarps and are used to aid in the attaching of the poly tarp to the canopy frame. The spacing of the grommets will vary from one manufacturer to another. Generally, spacing of the grommets will be between 18 to 36 inches. Shorter spacing of the grommets gives strength to the tarp and helps aid in the prevention of extreme movement that is associated with tearing.

In addition to grommets, Poly Tarps have several features that help reinforce the overall strength of the fabric. On each corner of a poly tarp a triangular plastic covering is installed to prevent the grommets from pulling through the fabric. The corners of the poly tarp are subject to the most tension under harsh conditions. Furthermore, during the grommet process a perimeter rope is added before the tarp fabric is folded back on itself and then laminated to create the hem. The combination of the perimeter rope and hem add great strength to the edges of the fabric

Choosing The Right Poly Tarp For You.

The Polyethylene Tarp has become one of the most popular choices among consumers for home protection, construction sites and recreation. The popularity of the Poly Tarp is largely due to the cost effectiveness compared to that of more expensive fabrics such as canvas and polyester. Moreover, the Poly Tarp is highly versatile based on the composition of polyethylene. The elements, which make up polyethylene, are naturally mildew resistant, waterproof, lightweight and flexible. Polyethylene Tarps will not tear or crack when exposed to the harsh extremes of hot and cold weather. The introduction of Polyethylene Tarps to the market has not only given the consumer a more cost effective product but has also allowed manufacturers to be more competitive with their product pricing. In the end you the consumer wins.

Poly Tarps are generally comprised of several layers of woven mesh fabric. The mesh fabric is then placed between two or more layers of large polyethylene sheets that are heat laminated before undergoing the finishing process. Once a Poly Tarp has been heat laminated it is then cut to the necessary production size. This process is referred to as the cut size or list size of the tarp. The cut size is not the actual size of the tarp once it reaches the consumer. When shopping for Tarpaulins one may notice on the package a box, which describes the cut size and the finish size. This is important to note because if you are looking far a 10’ x 20’ tarp the actual dimension of the tarp is 9’6” x 19’6”. The finish size is less than the list or cut size due to the grommet application process. Grommets are metal rings made of brass, steel or aluminum, which are used to secure the tarp using a fastening system such as Ball Bungee Ties. During the grommet application process the edges of the tarps are folded back on themselves and heat laminated with a reinforcement rope placed between the fold. The grommets are then stamped into place usually every 12, 18 or 36 inches apart. When shopping for a Poly Tarp one important element to look for is the mesh count. The mesh count of the tarp is determined by how closely the mesh threads are in relation to one another. The mesh count is the number of threads per square inch in both a vertical and horizontal pattern. The mesh count is also a key factor in the determining strength of a particular tarp.

Lighter weight tarps are typically Blue Tarps and generally have an overall mesh count of 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 weave. Blue poly tarps are used for applications such as ground tarps for camping, drop cloths for painting, general household covers and in recent years have become the primary choice for roof protection after and during hurricane season. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005 FEMA handed out thousands of Blue Tarps to residents as a way to protect their houses from further damage caused by rain. Lightweight and inexpensive, the Blue Poly Tarp is extremely popular as an all purpose general cover but is not the choice for use on canopy frames.

Heavy Duty Poly Tarps come in a variety of colors and generally have a minimum mesh count of 12 x 12 or 14 x 14. The most popular Heavy Duty Tarps on the market today are Silver Tarps and White Tarps. Heavy Duty Tarps are the ideal choice for canopy applications due to their strength and resistance. The Silver Heavy Duty Tarp is a unique waterproof material that is lightweight, inexpensive and provides total shade. Designed with a black polyethylene center layer, the Silver Tarp blocks 100% of the suns harmful UV rays and is 100% waterproof. The White Heavy Duty Tarp is also a strong, lightweight and waterproof material with a 12 x 12 or 14 x 14 mesh count but does not include the black sun blocker material. The White Poly Tarp is popular choice for its ability to allow natural light come through while at the same time providing some shade and UV protection. If you are looking for a Heavy Duty Poly Tarp that is Fire Retardant make certain the tarp is certified by the proper authorities and meets the minimum requirements of NFPA 701 and CPAI-84. Polyethylene is not naturally flame resistant and in fact is comprised partly of petroleum products making it flammable when in contact with open flame. There are Flame Retardant Poly Tarps available that have been manufactured using either flame resistant fibers or a topical application process. Poly Tarps of this nature are required to undergo vigorous testing and certification before entering the market. A Fire Retardant Tarp is required to have a permanent tag affixed to the material, which displays the certification code and qualifications of the tarp.

There are many tarps on the market today and choosing the right size and material can be challenging. The poly tarp is the most cost effective tarp on the market and has gained much popularity due its versatility. When shopping for a poly tarp be certain to read the offered specifications before deciding what tarp is right for your particular application.
