Blue tarps are a useful waterproof cover that can be used for just about any application where temporary protection is needed. Blue tarps can be found in residential settings as well as, commercial settings, construction sites and more. The lightweight, durable material protects valuables from elements such as rain, dirt and snow. In recent years, the blue tarp has been very useful in recovery efforts and has become a common sight along highways and residential communities across United States.

From mild storms to severe hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and tornadoes, the blue tarp is the preferred product for roof protection. Moreover, these temporary protective covers have proven useful as tarp tents in recovery efforts and have even helped in irrigation control and material storage. An article released today by the Huntsville Times, describes recovery efforts taking place from an F2 tornado that touched down on Thursday of last week in Alabama’s Five Points historic district. Times staff writer Patricia C. McCarter states, “From the orange cones in the streets to the blue tarps on dozens of roofs, colorful reminders dot the Five Points neighborhood that was at the center of Thursday's tornado.”

Fire Retardant Poly Tarps

There are many different varieties of poly tarps available for purchase. Aside from the many different color choices, there are more important factors, which differentiate one poly tarp from another. Some of these key factors include the thickness of the poly tarp, the mesh count, the grommet spacing and the treatments added to the fabric both during and after production. Fire retardant tarps are unique in the fact that they are not only rated as a heavy-duty poly cover but are also treated topically and rated as fire resistant. Fire retardant tarps go through extensive testing before they are available for purchase by the consumer. The rigorous testing is necessary to ensure that the end user is getting a high quality tarp product, which meets both local and national fire authority requirements.

The first step in licensing a fire retardant tarp starts with obtaining a product sample, which is then sent to an independent testing lab for approval. Upon weeks of testing the fire retardant tarp, the independent lab will issue a report of their findings. Assuming that the fabric has passed the independent labs requirements, the fire retardant tarp is then sent to the State Fire Marshals office with a copy of the independent labs report. The State Fire Marshals office will then conduct a test of their own to confirm the results found by the independent lab. Only after the fire retardant tarp has passed both the independent and the State Fire Marshals testing requirements will the fabric be issued a registration number.

Fire retardant tarps meet the requirements NFPA 701, CPAI-84 and California Title 19 standards. Many people assume that once the tarp is rated as fire retardant, the fabric will not burn when exposed to heat or flame. In fact, the fabric will burn when exposed to heat or flame. A fire retardant tarp is not fire proof but rather fire resistant. A fire retardant tarp will not hold a flame and will self extinguish once the source has been eliminated. It is this self-extinguishing characteristic, which makes the fire retardant tarp, so unique compared to that of regular heavy-duty poly tarps.

Each fire retardant tarp includes a permanent tag, which is affixed to fabric. The tag attached to the fire retardant tarp contains both the registration number and the codes for which it is compliant under. Many states are now requiring that all swap meet and flea market vendors change their existing canopy covers to that of a fire retardant tarp. Upon inspection, the fire prevention officer will look for the attached tag to assure compliance under local fire codes.

Currently, fire retardant tarps are available in both silver and white colors. There is a wide range of sizes to choose from and shipping is offered throughout United States. High Visibility Poly Tarp Covers

In some instances it is important to maintain high visibility. This is especially crucial for emergency responders. During a disaster situation, emergency responders want to be part of the solution and not the problem. In addition, responders want to be accessible and visible to those in need. A great way to maintain visibility is by using tarps for temporary canopies that will be providing medical care and distributing supplies. We offer a full line of high visibility poly covers, which include red tarps, yellow tarps, green tarps and orange tarps.

Our high visibility covers are also ideal for use in triage. During mass casualty incidents medical responders need to prioritise medical care based on severity of injury. Common triage colors include green (for walking wounded), yellow (for those who need to be observed), red ( for those that require immediate medical care) and black (for those that are deceased). High visibility poly tarps are a beneficial tool for these instances and are available in several different sizes that can service both smaller and larger incidents.

Using A Tarp For Home Improvement and Construction Projects

Home improvement projects range in size as well as the type of task that needs to be accomplished. In most cases, any home improvement project will require some type of construction whether it is demolition, repair or enhancement. Choosing the proper tools for the job is the first step in any home remodeling or construction venture. Tarp covers are not only a common element in construction projects but have been a proven necessity for protecting valuable materials such as roofs, supplies and lumber. In addition, poly tarpaulin covers are beneficial for protecting open concrete slabs as well as, protecting dirt slopes from erosion caused by rain. Plastic Visqueen is often used for these types of projects but is made of a thin 4 Mil material, which can tear during use not only causing aggravation but also monetary loss from the destruction of materials and property. Home improvement and construction projects can be expensive and purchasing materials that can be used for not only multiple purposes but also over multiple uses is greatly beneficial and cost effective. Tarps are a very versatile product that can be used over a long period of time and then stored away until the next project. There are a wide variety of tarpaulin covers available for both residential and commercial use, which can be purchased at your local hardware store or online from a specialty tarp supplier.
